Newcastle Witches podcast

In a new podcast, Newcastle’s 17th-century witch trials shed light on a long-forgotten part of its history.

This podcast, produced by Newcastle and Gateshead-based film company Candle & Bell, explores NewcNewcastle’sk history of witchcraft. When Maria Caruana Galizia and assistant producer Caitlin Bramwell discovered that they were both fascinated by medieval tales of witchcraft, they decided to research NewcNewcastle’story.
Thirty women in the region were accused of witchcraft during the Newcastle Witch Trials between 1649 and 1650. Twenty-seven were convicted before 15 women, and one man was executed on the Town Moor.
