Bhatti was born and raised in Calgary. But her parents came from Punjab in northern India. So, like many children of immigrant families, Bhatti grew up straddling two cultures. Some aspects of traditional South Asian culture were so accepted and normalized, including the assumption that all girls will eventually live with their husband’s family, bear children and defer to their in-laws on most matters, that Bhatti admits she didn’t realize they were being instilled in her at the time.
